Who is William Barclay?
Professor William Barclay
(1907-1978) of Glasgow University was a popular Scottish
Theologian and one of this century's most important communicators
of God's Word. Creatively teaching through lectures, sermons,
books and on television, his work inspires the lay person as well
as the theologian. Dr. Barclay's excellent cultural and language
studies have earned his commentaries a place on evangelical
bookshelves around the world.
What does Barclay say about Mark
16:1-8, The Resurrection?
"One
thing is certain-if Jesus had not risen from the dead, we would
never have heard of him... By far the best proof of the
Resurrection is the existence of the Christian church. Nothing
else could have changed sad and despairing men and women into
people radiant with joy and flaming with courage. The
Resurrection is the central fact of the whole Christian
faith."
John Phillips is widely respected in Evangelical circles. He served as assistant director of the Moody Correspondence School and director of the Emmaus Correspondence School, the largest Bible correspondence ministry in the world.
The Exploring Series is known for unique features which make it a favorite of Bible students and preachers. In addition to a thorough exposition of the text, Phillips provides a detailed alliterative outline, authorship information, numerous illustrations, and wonderfully practical application. If you are looking for a preacher's commentary, this is an excellent choice. $20
In this series Phillips introduces us to an interesting selection of Old and New Testament characters. He explores their strengths and the great things they accomplished for God. He also looks at the struggles, temptations, and failures that sapped their spiritual strength and led them into sin. These collections of outlines have been developed by a true master of the craft. Some are short and pithy, others are longer and more detailed. Some can be expanded into a whole series of messages. All of them will help the preacher keep his points well in hand as he delivers his sermon, and help the audience retain the highlights of the message.
