A buffy breast and crown stripes distinguish the female and fall male plumage (see photo below). In spring the male is black below, with a yellow patch on the back of the head, and large white wing patches. Length: 18 cm.; weight: 33 g. Audio (M. Oberle). Breeds in wet fields and swamps in the northern USA and southern Canada; winters in central South America. Breeding populations in North America decreased by 1.6% per year in the period 1966-1995 due to habitat loss. Uncommon migrant in coastal fields and open areas in Puerto Rico.
