In breeding plumage, the male is bright red with black wings and tail. The female and non-breeding male are bright green or olive green, with darker wings and tail. Length: 18 cm.; weight: 25 g. in breeding season and 35 g. in migration. Audio (M. Oberle). Breeds in deciduous forests of eastern North America; winters in the northern Andes. Rare migrant along the coast and in mountain forests (e.g. Maricao, 25 October 1998). TAXONOMY: PASSERIFORMES; THRAUPIDAE. |
