In breeding plumage, this species has a yellow crown and chestnut sides. In the winter plumage likely to be seen on migration, it has a green back, yellow crown, white eye ring and two prominent white wing bars. Length: 12.7 cm; weight: 11 g. Audio 2 (M. Oberle). Breeds in northeastern USA and southeastern Canada, south through the Appalachian Mountains. Like the Prairie Warbler, this species is one of the few that has benefited from deforestation: its preferred second-growth forest habitat is commoner now than 100 years ago. Most individuals winter in Central America; rare in the Greater Antilles in wet forests and gardens (e.g. El Yunque, Río Espíritu Santo, 10 April 2000; Rio Abajo State Forest, Utuado, 17 February 2004).

TAXONOMY: PASSERIFORMES; PARULIDAE.
