Yellow-crowned Bishop

The breeding plumage male is black with a bright yellow crown and back. The female and non-breeding plumage male are streaked with dark brown on the back, and have a yellow line above the eye and a dark patch behind the eye. Length: 12 cm. The maleÆs song is high-pitched and squeaky. It lives in marshes and adjacent grasslands and shrubby fields, and feeds on insects and seeds. This introduced species is a native of much of Sub-Saharan Africa. It is rare and localized in Puerto Rico, such as at Laguna Cartagena National Wildlife Refuge and in Rφo Grande.
