The adult is a rich brown above and on the throat, with a black scaling pattern on the white underside. Immatures are dull brown. Length: 11 cm.; weight: 12-15 g. Voice is a two-note call, higher pitched than the Bronze Mannikin's. Audio (M. Oberle). Travels in flocks that may contain other finch species. Feeds on seeds. Wags tail. The female lays 4-6 white eggs in a round nest of grass hidden in a palm, shrub, or small tree. Native to Asia where it ranges from Indonesia west to Nepal, but most legal importations have been from India.

TAXONOMY: PASSERIFORMES; ESTRILDIDAE; Estrildinae. Also called the Scaly-breasted Munia.
