The breeding male has slate gray upper parts, buff undersides, and a black face patch. The female and non-breeding male are duller, while the immatures (see photo above) are browner. But all plumages have a white rump and upper tail, visible in flight. Often has an upright posture. Length: 15 cm.; weight:18-33 g. Breeds in northern North America, Greenland and Eurasia. Accidental in coastal Puerto Rico (22 Sept. 1966).
