A brown-backed seabird with two, larger central feathers protruding from the end of the tail in breeding plumage. Length: 46-51 cm.; weight: 550-850 g. The jaeger species also have a dark morph that has the same proportions but is mostly very dark brown (see photo above). Nests on coastal Arctic tundra of North America and Eurasia, where the breeding success varies with the cycles of rodent populations. Rare offshore of Puerto Rico where it often chases other seabirds to steal food. However, one was reported inland over Laguna Tortugero on April 29, 1998.
