Similar to the Black-bellied Plover but with darker upperparts, plus completely white wing linings visible in flight. In spring it has golden flecks on the back, and black undersides. Length: 24-28 cm.; weight: 122-194 g. Breeds in northern Alaska and Canada. Winters in short grass fields in southern South America. Severely impacted by market hunting in the 19th Century. Rare fall and spring migrant in short grass fields and beaches on Puerto Rico (e.g. 2 on 9 September 2001, at the mouth of the Arecibo River). TAXONOMY: CHARADRIIFORMES; CHARADRIIDAE; Charadriinae |
