A tall sandpiper with a mottled brown body. Its bill is red with a black tip, and is slightly upturned. Length: 42-48 cm.; weight: 285-454 g. Audio (M. Oberle). Breeds in north central North America, and normally winters on the coasts of North and Central America; rare winter visitor to wetlands in Puerto Rico (e.g., Boquer≤n Wildlife Refuge, 29 December 2001) .
