A rufous-colored head with a tan crown and a gray body distinguish the male. The female is similar to the female American Wigeon, but the head and breast are the same dull brown color (the American Wigeon has a gray head and brown breast). In flight, this species has a gray wing lining (white in the American Wigeon). Length: 45-51 cm.; weight: 415-970 g. Breeds in Iceland, Scandinavia, Siberia and northern Russia. Normally winters in southern Europe, Asia and Africa. Accidental in wetlands of Puerto Rico (e.g., Laguna Cartagena National Wildlife Refuge, 27 December 2003 until 4 February 2004).
