Tenement Museum

This site attempts to preserve and interpret the history of the immigrant experience on New York's Lower East Side. The site is cleverly designed. It is divided into four parts. Urban Log Cabin allows you to visit some of the ten thousand people who lived in the museum's building between 1870 and 1915. Excavation lets you peel away thirteen layers of wallpaper or look beneath the floor boards to view articles discovered during the renovation. Another allows viewers to compare two apartments one circa 1870, the other 1935. History is a photographic essay of tenement life in the 1930s and 1940s. This is an outstanding site.
