Library of Congress American Memory Home Page

Selected documents, photographs, movies, and sound recordings relating to various aspects of American history and culture can be found at this handsomely designed site. Most are primary source and archival materials from the Library of Congress's special collections. Only a minute fraction of the library's vast holdings can be accessed as of 1997, although there are ambitious expansion plans. Unfortunately, it's a busy and often slow site. The site is searchable and includes resources for educators. At present, the site features documents and images on African Americans, architecture photos, Civil War photos, the conservation movement (1850-1920), the Constitutional Convention, Daguerreotypes, the Federal Writers' Project, early motion pictures, vaudeville, and women's suffrage.

"Such a variety of material!" Joan Clarke, Wethersfield High School, Wethersfield, CT.
