Democracy in America

This site attempts to construct a virtual America based on Alexis de Tocqueville's famous political and cultural analysis of American democracy. Viewers can tour this America based on Tocqueville's itinerary, accounts of other foreign visitors, and examples of the culture of the period. In addition to the tour, viewers can also read the full text of the book Democracy in America, and visit a section of the site called Tocqueville's America: 1997. This is a well-done and interesting site that will be of interest to upper-level U.S. history students.
