American Slave Narratives
From 1936 to 1938, over 2,300 former slaves were interviewed as part of the Works Progress Administration. This Web site includes a sample of these narratives and some of the photographs taken at the time of the interviews. The former slaves provide a first-hand account of their experiences. The site also includes links to other resources and a bibliography of selected readings on American slavery. The transcript of one interview includes links to sound files from the original recorded interview. This Web page is a rich source of information.
