This site provides a list of rhetorical terms with examples and links to other sites that explore rhetoric or literary devices that have been used throughout history to embolden speech and writing. The familiar metaphor is defined as "implied comparison achieved through a figurative use of words; the word is used not in its literal sense, but in one analogous to it." Here's the definition of the not-so-familiar paraprosdokian: "surprise or unexpected ending of a phrase or series." There are examples of each if the definition is less than enlightening. Links lead to a fairly scholarly bunch of Web sites.
