ATTENTION: When running this demo, you should avoid using screen resolutions which utilize Large Fonts. Although the demonstration will run on Large Font resolutions, the accuracy of its automated mouse movements may be adversely affected. This is because for Large Font screen resolutions, application windows are proportioned differently. The SuperJAM! demo relies on fixed window coordinates to orchestrate its mouse movements, and these coordinates become altered in Large Font resolutions. For best results, use a standard resolution. IF YOU DON'T HEAR SOUND SuperJAM!, by default, adheres to the General MIDI standard. In order to insure sound device compatibility, SuperJAM! uses the Windows 3.1 MIDI Mapper to address your sound card or MIDI interface. The MIDI Mapper basically acts as a mediator between SuperJAM! and your sound device. If you run the SuperJAM! demo and do not hear any sound coming from your sound device, chances are that you do not have the Windows MIDI Mapper configured properly on your system. NOTE: For best results, you should use the MIDI Mapper. However, you can disable SuperJAM!'s use of the MIDI Mapper by doing the following: 1. Using a text editor, such as Windows Notepad, open up the SUPERJAM.INI file located in your SuperJAM! demo directory. 2. Underneath the [Options] heading, change the "Mapper=1" line to read "Mapper=0". Do not add any additional characters or alter the rest of the file in any way. This will disable SuperJAM!'s use of the MIDI Mapper. CONFIGURING THE MIDI MAPPER In order to set up the MIDI Mapper for use with SuperJAM! and your sound device, do the following: 1. Open up the Control Panel by double-clicking on the Control Panel icon located in the Main program group in Windows. 2. Open up the MIDI Mapper by double-clicking on the MIDI Mapper icon in the Control Panel. (If you do not see a MIDI Mapper icon in your Control Panel, you probably don't have the necessary driver(s) for your sound device installed on your system. Refer to the section of this document titled, "INSTALLING DRIVERS".) 3. Inside the MIDI Mapper dialog box, make sure the "Show" area has "Setups" selected, and then click on the New... button. 4. Inside the New MIDI Setup dialog box, name the setup "SuperJAM! Setup" and give it a short description, if you like. Click on OK. 5. Inside the MIDI Setup dialog box, go to the Port Name column and select your sound device driver for all 16 of the boxes. (Clicking in each of the boxes opens up a list of available output choices.) This will direct all of SuperJAM!'s selected instruments to your sound device. If you do not see your sound device driver listed in the available output choices, you probably don't have the necessary driver(s) installed on your system. Refer to the section, "INSTALLING DRIVERS". 6. When you have finished choosing output for all 16 Port Name boxes, click on OK and save the new setup when prompted to. 7. In the MIDI Mapper dialog box, you will see the new setup listed in the "Name:" combo box. Close the MIDI Mapper and run SuperJAM!. If you now hear sound, but do not hear any drums playing, see the following section, "REMAPPING DRUMS." REMAPPING DRUMS If you hear sound coming from your sound device, but notice that there are no drums playing, your sound device probably transmits its drums on channel 16 instead of 10. (Channel 10 is the General MIDI standard channel for drums, and is used by SuperJAM! by default. However, many sound cards use channel 16, instead.) You will need to account for this inside the MIDI Mapper: 1. Go back into the Control Panel and double-click on the MIDI Mapper icon to open up the MIDI Mapper. 2. In the MIDI Mapper dialog box, make sure the "Show" area has "Setups" selected, and that "SuperJAM! Setup" is selected in the "Name:" combo box. (If you have not already created a setup for your sound device, you must first do so before continuing. Refer to the previous section, "Configuring The MIDI Mapper.") 3. Click on the "Edit..." button. 4. Inside the MIDI Setup dialog box, go to the Dest Chan column and change 10 to 16. This will remap the drum parts in SuperJAM! to channel 16 to accomodate your sound card. 5. Click OK, and then save the setup. 6. Close the MIDI Mapper and run SuperJAM! You should now hear drums when the music plays. INSTALLING DRIVERS In order for your sound device to communicate with your computer, a device driver for the device must be installed on your system. Most sound devices include a disk which contains their device drivers. Windows 3.1 also includes the most common device drivers, which may be compatible with your sound device. If you do not have a driver for your device, please contact the manufacturer of your sound device. NOTE: If you are installing a new version of a device driver which currently resides on your system, you must first remove the old version before installing the new one. Refer to the section, "REMOVING DRIVERS" before continuing with the new driver's installation. To install a device driver, do the following: 1. Go to the Control Panel and double-click on the Drivers icon. A list of installed drivers appears. If you see your sound device driver listed, you do not need to install it. If you do not see your device driver listed, go to step 4. 2. To view a list of device drivers provided with Windows 3.1, click on Add... If you are using a Windows-supplied device driver, select the one you want to install and click OK. If you are not, select Add Unlisted Or Updated Driver and click OK. The Install driver dialog box appears. 3. Insert the disk the driver is located on and click OK. Follow the instructions to set up your device driver as needed, if applicable. Make sure that the settings you specify do not conflict with the settings used by other drivers in your system. For example, you may run into an interrupt conflict, where two or more devices use the same interrupt setting. An interrupt conflict causes your system to work improperly. Please check the documentation accompanying each device to assure that your device settings do not create any problems. CHANGING DRIVER SETTINGS If for some reason you need to alter your driver settings after you've installed the driver, do so by going to the Control Panel again. Then double- click on the Drivers icon to view the list of installed drivers, and select the driver you want to reconfigure. Click on Setup... and select the options as needed. Keep in mind the changes you make do not take effect until you restart Windows. REMOVING DRIVERS You may wish to remove a device driver from the Installed Drivers list if you are not using the device any longer. Removing a driver from the list does not remove the device driver file from your hard disk, so if you ever need to use the device later, you will not need to install the driver again. You may not install an updated version of a driver that is already installed on your system. You must first remove the old driver. If you do not do this, you will receive an error message when trying to install the new one. To remove a driver, double-click on the Drivers icon in the Control Panel. A list of the currently installed drivers appears. Select the driver you want to remove and click Remove. Once again, you need to restart Windows for this change to take effect immediately.
