Alpha Carinae, "Canopus", is the 
second brightest star in the sky, next
to Sirius. It has an estimated 
luminosity of about 30 times that of 
the sun, and an absolute magnitude of
-3.1. Canopus has been commonly used
by spacecraft for navigational purposes
on their interplanetary missions.
