International Year Exchange Programmes

Interculture South Africa offers participants the opportunity to find out first hand what it means to live in another country.

Hosting

International high school students come to South Africa to experience life in South Africa. Our country is very diverse and students benefit greatly from exposure to the variety of cultures, ideas, customs and languages.

They come to learn from families that open their homes to students, and they also bring the wealth of their own background. Students attend school daily at a local school.

Students come to South Africa for one year, in August or January.

In 1996 we hosted 55 students. This number will increase to 70 in 1997, and 82 in 1998.

Sending

We also send high school students on an international exchange. The student will live with a family, go to school, learn about the culture and language.

Although the sending family need to pay for their child to participate, Interculture South Africa makes available some funding for scholarships, depending on our resources. There are many deserving students who cannot afford the cost of the programme, and about 25% of the 30 students leaving South Africa each year need financial assistance.

Students go on exchange for one year in January or August.

In 1996 there are 23 students away, and in 1997 27 will travel, and 45 in 1998.

Although the exchange is not an academic exchange, the life experience gained in the year is vast. Students who have not yet completed their schooling do so on return to South Africa.
