BIOGRAPHY Peter Taylor was born 17/12/40 at Oodnadatta, approx 500 kms South East of Alice Springs in the Simpson Desert. As a small boy he traveled with his father often by horse or camel, to Horseshoe bend station where his father worked as a stationhand. From there they traveled north working from station to station until they came to Hermannsburg a Western Arrernte community in the Mc Donnel Ranges, 150kms West of Alice Springs. Hermannsburg is the home of Albert Namatjira possibly the most famous Aboriginal painter of all time. After living at Hurmannsburg with his father for a number of years. Peter was only a young boy when he was taken, along with other young aboriginal boys and girls. To Collbrook home at Eden Hills, Adelaide. While attending school in Adelaide, Peter showed an interest in drawing and was taught how to sketch by an art teacher, Trevor Clare. Peter has five brothers, Harry, Alec, Samy, William Robbie and three sisters Mary(eldest), Myra and Mavis. Peter's sister Myra worked for Doctor Dugget in Adelaide as a house-maid. Doctor Dugget had quite a few of original Albert Namatjira paintings on his walls and Peter would go as often as he could to have the pleasure to look at them. He also went to an exhibition in Adelaide of Albert's paintings which made him very homesick and longed for his old land. Peter returned to Alice Springs at around the age of 20 where he sat with Keith Namatjira and Clem Abbott in an old house at 86 Todd St, in Alice Springs to paint his landscapes. In 1995, Peter's family/community tribal group Pwerte Marnte Marnte purchased the Art Gallery that Peter started his career back in 1960. After 30 years of development of his unique style, his watercolour are sought after by collectors throughout Australia and overseas. | |
