BIOGRAPHY

Walangari Kantawarra also known as Colin Mc Cormack was born in Alice Springs in 1961. His mother is Doreen Mc Cormack an Arrernte women who also paints for the Aboriginal Art and Culture Centre and is father was Patrick Carroll, a Pintupi / Luritja man.

At seven years of age Walangari became a ward of the state so he could have a better education. Over time he has earned a Bachelor of Arts Education at Deacon University, a Bachelor of Education at NT University and an associate diploma in education.

Walangari first began painting after receiving some paints from his uncle Harold Ulamari. His first works were of Western landscpaes in the style of his great grandfather Albert Namitjira.His works today portray a style uniquely his own.

When asked about the importance of Contemporary Art, Walangari believes "Aboriginal Art appeals to modern tastes, people can learn stories and culture from them too. I want to create a better feeling for all people towards the history of this country."
