A study of Aboriginal people and their many cultures...

  • can bring renewed understanding of Aboriginal hopes and aspirations
  • can help non-Aboriginal people to understand and appreciate what is important for Aboriginal peoples
  • can help all people to better understand their own culture
  • can encourage teachers and students to work for a society free of racism and discrimination

If you are new to this area

There are many possible starting points for the study of Aboriginal cultures

  • One approach begins with contemporary stories, and looks at the lives of Indigenous Australians, how they are living and what they are doing, today

  • Another approach begins with 'traditional' Dreaming stories, and explains how stories, people, land and Dreaming are connected, and have always been central to all aspects of life. This approach goes on to show how Dreaming is still central to the great richness and diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait cultures.

  • A third uses an historical approach, and examines the history of Aboriginal peoples and their cultures. It often looks, at the past, the impact of white invasion, and the movement to survival and self determination.

  • Experienced teachers may wish to include Aboriginal perspectives across the curriculum. This approach is a current focus in many Australian states, but requires considerable experience to be successful. Information for Australian teachers and other here.
