The two major companies in the Japanese phone market are NTT for domestic calls and KDD for international connections. The two companies had a monopoly until 1985. Since then, several new companies have entered the market.
With KDD one can make calls to most regions of the world and can be assisted by operators. The other companies do not cover all the regions of the world and do not offer operators.

There are several types of public telephones in Japan. Local calls are possible from any phone but oversea calls can only be made from certain phones. Telephone cards are popular and can be used at almost all public telephones. They are sold at kiosks and vending machines.

Today, you will find mainly three types of public telephones:

GREENGREYVIOLET

Frequencyby far the most commonquite commona very few, mainly at large stations
Oversea Callsusually not possiblepossiblepossible
Payment methodscash, phone cardscash, phone cardscash, credit cards

These three types are the most modern and most common types of public telephones. You might, however, encounter other, older types, like pink telephones. They accept 10 Yen coins only.

If you stay in Japan for a longer time and want to have your own telephone line at home you can either rent a telephone line or buy one. You have to consult NTT. Buying a telephone line costs about $ 800. Renting a line is much cheaper but you may not be able to do international calls.
