Sapporo is the largest city of Hokkaido, the northernmost main island of Japan. With a metropolitan population of almost two million people Sapporo ranks as the fifth largest city of Japan.

The modern city of Sapporo is very young. Until the middle of the 19th century, almost only the Ainu populated Hokkaido and the city hadn't developed strongly. After the Meiji Restoration, however, the Japanese settled down in Hokkaido, and Sapporo started to grow rapidly. The street net of Sapporo has been planned and built according to the rectangular street system of North American cities.

Sapporo is famous for its snow festival which takes place every February. The olympic winter games were held in the city in the year 1972.
The weather during the winter months is very cold.
