The new constitution went into effect in the year 1947 and replaced the old Meiji constitution from 1889. The major changes were:

The complete division of the three powers legislature, executive and judiciary.
The emperor is only the symbol of the state without any effective governmental power.
Sovereign power lies with the people.
The prohibition of leading war or maintaining an army.
The guarantee of human rights.
