Transportation in Tokyo

Japanese taxis are very expensive. As a tourist you usually do not need to take a taxi as long as you are in a large city and it is daytime or evening. The public transportation system there is usually very efficient.

taxiIn smaller cities and the countryside, however, the network of public transportation is often much less denser, and taking a taxi, for example from the train station to your home, can be much more comfortable.

Since most train and bus services stop around one o'clock in the night, many people use a taxi at that time of the night, especially on weekends; on a Friday or Saturday evening, long line-ups are possible in front of a train station. Waiting times for a taxi can then be surprisingly long.

As a foreigner you should remember the following two things: Japanese taxi doors open and close automatically. Don't do it by yourself. Also, you are not supposed to give a tip to the driver since everything is included in the price.

In case you do not speak Japanese or your destination is a not very well known place, it may be a good idea to give the driver the precise address of your destination on a piece of paper. Tokyo is a huge city and the address system is sometimes confusing.
