| The shrine was rebuilt by Taira Kyomori in the 12th century and used to be the "family shrine" of the Taira. It is commonly said that Miyajima is one of the three coastal sceneries considered most beautiful in Japan beside Amanohashidate in Kyoto and Matsushima in Sendai (Miyagi prefecture). |
