The X-Files 2

Genre: Science Fiction/Horror.

Studio: 20th Century Fox.
Production Company: We're assuming Ten Thirteen Productions would again be the production company.

Project Phase: Movies Rumored.

Who's In It: David Duchovny (Agent Fox Mulder, unsigned); Gillian Anderson (Agent Dana Scully, unsigned).
Who's Making It: Undoubtedly series creator Chris Carter would be involved in some capacity. The real question is, in which roles will he be involved?

Premise: Unknown. Carter alluded to the possibility that the second feature would be focused on other paranormal investigations for the Agents and the UFO/government conspiracy mythology would be left alone...for the moment.

Release Date: As early as summer 2000, after the conclusion of the seventh season, but we're betting somewhere between Thanksgiving 2000 - Summer 2001.

Comments: After grossing $30 million on its opening weekend, The X-Files has proven to Fox execs that it has movie legs. With at least two more seasons left in the series and Carter already acknowledging Fox's interest in doing another feature, it's virtually guaranteed Mulder and Scully will be seen on the silver screen again.

Rumors: Unknown.

July 26, 1998... Last Wednesday Fox held a network party and invited the media to attend. During the party the Tampa Tribune television critic Walt Belcher landed an interview with X-Files creator Chris Carter. At the party Carter revealed to the media the first glimpse of the type of sequel fans may see in a couple of years...

This is excerpted from the Tampa Tribune newspaper:

September 20, 1998... According to Ryan Salmon, it's set in what passes for stone in Hollywood: the sequel is a go and is known as The X-Files: Invasion. BBC Entertainment got the word from Fox that filming will be next summer with the release in mid-2000, post-final season. Both leads are confirmed to be in the film.

Then, from the Sci-Fi Channel, the scooper heard a bit from Carter about the Mulder/Scully relationship that seems to get everyone's Andromeda Strain-suit in a wad:

"Mulder and Scully love each other. Undoubtedly they do. That they would kiss would be a natural, I think, expression of what they feel. I've always said I wanted their relationship to be a romance without being romantic and sexual and physical, that it should be based on mutual respect and a sense of protectiveness of one another, shared passions. And that's really what the [hallway scene] was."

Sounds like the M/S relationship mirrors a lot of my own relationships: romance but without the romance. But I digress. As for what happened in the show, are we about to see the two pull a Rolling Stone cover on us? Carter replied, "The fact that it nearly happened now will set up opportunities. I think [a relationship] might wreck the show, to be honest. But I also think that, as everyone knows onThe X-Files, anything can happen. I'll leave it at that."

And then, not content to give us all this, Ryan did more. He found a Carter quote in UK Neon Magazine: "The word sequel scares me, but the word PREQUEL doesn't."

Ryan even liked The X-Files so much, he's not just a client of the sequel's unofficial website, but he's also the webowner. Find it at http://www.wsu.edu/~rsalmon/master.html.

September 21, 1998... 'Azxphile' chimes in with his understanding of the X-Sequel's status.

'The INVASION title Ryan Salmon has quoted is now just a rumor, because the second movie will be more of a light mytharc/stand alone. INVASION is now TENTATIVELY the title, but the final plot isn't 100%...expect those to firm up soon. Real soon. Carter would like to start this thing moving ASAP...like he did with FIGHT THE FUTURE. Have the script early, sign your starts, firm up any details, shoot as soon as the season is done...that kind of thing.

[Thanks to 'Azxphile' for the debriefing.]

September 22, 1998... We've been told that the first wave of writing has begun on the X-Sequel. [Scoop provided by 'Sandman']

September 28, 1998... Some of our fearless readers have expressed incredulity about the casting word which said both Duchovny and Anderson are already on board an X-sequel. As 'GF2020' put it: "David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are NOT signed for the film, as reported by the Hollywood reporter. David wants to do a romantic comedy next summer and Gillian has not even been made a contractual offer. INVASION IS NOT EVEN THE RUMORED TITLE. Ryan Solomon got that rumor off Dark Horizons who put it up even before the first came out, which indicates that it unreliable." The romantic comedy that GF2020 speaks of is Return to Me, which more than one scooper reports will be on David's plate for next summer and not the proposed X-sequel. As far as the implication that Invasion is not the rumored title, I propose this: it's a title, and I heard it in a rumor. In my opinion, that makes it a rumored title, all right. Anyway, if we could just get Duchovny to tell us what's up, maybe that would satisfy everyone. Or maybe not. [Thanks to 'GF2020,' 'dauermann,' 'XFFAN,' and anonymous.]

October 5, 1998... Could Mr. Carter himself direct the sequel? A mysterious conspiratorial newsgroup posting would make one think so, apparently. [So says 'sguay,' and we know where he lives.]

October 20, 1998... I see your rumors and I raise you...another rumor. "Rob Bowman, who directed the first movie, has indicated that the film will NOT begin shooting this summer. It may still be 2-3 years down the road." [Reported anonymously.]

November 10, 1998... Some clarification surronding the propable release date of this one has emerged. "In regards to my last X-Files movie scoop . I'd like to say I told you so to whoever thought there would a sequel in 2000. Chris Carter was on Kevin & Beanon October 30th promoting the 6th season premiere. A question came up about a possible sequel. Carter's response and I quote: 'Yeah, we're think--it's in the thinking stages right now. Uh, there was some talk about trying to do it, uh, this coming summer so it would come up at the end of the X-Files series, which would be after season seven but, uh, that's definetely not gonna happen.'
