May 19, 1996... A rumor comes our way that a big-budget movie version of the little-known Hanna Barbara cartoon series Wacky Races may be in the early stages of development. The idea for the show is said to have spawned during 1996's Cannes Film Festival announcement of a Dustin Hoffman/Village Roadshow production pact to produce more family oriented entertainment. In the successful wake of live-action projects based on cartoons like The Flintstones, the idea has certain attractive qualities to it: a pre-existing familiarity with the story and characters, the appeal of nolstagia, and the curiosity of a broad range of the potential audience.
Although nothing confirmed has been announced, an even wilder rumor is circulating that Dustin Hoffman may be considering the role of "Dick Dastardly", and Chazz Palminteri could be up for the role of the leader of the 'Anthill Mob' group.
