Scoop Feedback:

November 17, 1996... TriStar was reportedly indecisive about solidifying the project due to the material's religious nature. Fincher will reportedly receive final cut approval along with a $2.5 million paycheck. [Additional scoop information supplied by 'pkalapa'.]

September 9, 1997... Dark Horizons reports that the storyline is slightly different than what it was originally said to be. According to DH the story begins when two priests find existance of the non-existance of God. The two priests then launch themselves into an extremely violent crime spree, which includes murders, rapes, robbing and indulging in all sorts of drugs. Faced with a threat to their dogma, the Catholic church hires a 'born again' assassin to liquidate the pair before they bring about the fall of organized religion.

Frankly, if this is really the true storyline, so what? Go rent Natural Born Killers, which did it first. We'll try and track down a script (unless someone wants to be kind enough to send us one first...) [Reported by 'Nicky the Warlock'; originally appeared on Dark Horizons.]

November 2, 1997... It seems that the project has changed hands from Tri-Star. A new director is now on the project. [Information submitted anonymously.]

March, 1998... Gore Verbinski (Mouse Hunt) is now the director.

October 20, 1998... An anonymous scooper reviewed the script and stated, "A very interesting idea, but unfortunately, it will never get made." The scooper felt that the project was too controversial to ever see the light of day, considering that, in the scooper's opinion, other projects like Dogma are taking flack and Prince of Egypt is being altered to appease religious experts. He mentions a particular scene in which the former priests sniff cocaine off of a Bible. [Thoughts provided anonymously]

It must be mentioned in PoE's defense, the experts were consulted at the request of DreamWorks in order to make the film as true to the original stories as possible. As for Dogma, Miramax could be holding the film back to give it extra punch or to build support for it despite right-wingers or both. Regardless, movies can get made despite religious stigmas (Orgazmo's Mormon lead and Jesus cameo spring to mind), if the people making the film believe in what they're doing. We shall see.
