Comments: While the appeal of the first Mask movie relied upon Carrey's imaginative (and disturbed) sense of humor and the use of cutting-edge CGI effects, the sequel will have to build upon the storyline to keep the series fresh and interesting. Will we learn the origin behind the mysterical mask and where it came from? Are there other masks out there that can transform the wearer? And most importantly to the male audience members - will Cameron Diaz be in it???

Rumors: Unknown.

Scoop Feedback:

April 5, 1996... [Thanks to Christian for some additional info!]

April 24, 1996... Rumors flit down to CA about the proposed storyline: Jim Carrey's chaarcter is killed by the mob, and it's up to Lt. Kellaway and Tina to escape with the Mask and avenge Stanley's death. We're pretty sure this story isn't going to happen, as Carrey is promised to do the sequel - but it could be an 'alternative' storyline should Carrey decide he doesn't want to return for the sequel. May 11, 1996... Jim Carrey, Cameron Diaz, Peter Greene and that damn dog all are going to return in the sequel. Really, we promise. [Scoop provided by Diane.]

May 13, 1996... The sequel is scheduled for a Christmas 1997 release. [Scoop info submitted by Christian.]

September 16, 1996... This scooper has heard that the name of the picture has been changed from Revenge of the Mask to The Mask's Revenge. [Scoop reported by Diane, who likes the new name better; we agree.]

September 22, 1996... We're told that this time around there are more special garments that transform the wearer, such as a pair of pants, a shirt, pantyhose, shoes and a tie. [Scoop submitted anonymously.]

November 29, 1996... The Peter Greene character who was flushed out to sea in the first film winds up surfacing in Paris in the sequel. According to the brief synopsis New Line Cinema has given out, this is where the majority of the action takes place. ILM will do the effects again. [Scoop furnished by Brent Lynch.]

May 25, 1997... This project is starting to flounder in the water admidst the stunning success of Jim Carrey. Carrey's salary has skyrocketed, and his schedule is sewn up almost a year in the future, so the possibility of his return appearance in a Mask sequel diminishes as more time goes by.

But here's an interesting report we received from a comic book reader:

"I had a conversation late last year with Mike Richardson, owner of Dark Horse Comics and creator of The Mask, as well as executive producer on The Mask films. He had just returned from LA after having final talks with Jim Carrey about the sequel. Jim bowed out of the project on good terms with the studio and Dark Horse. This came straight from Mike Richardson's mouth. He also told me that the sequel would still be made without Carrey, following the format of the comic book, where the Mask is passed from person to person." [Scoop sent in by 'Chiezzwiz'.]

August 9, 1997... This person's sources told him that the present storyline has the supernatural mask split in two pieces. Carrey's character, Stanley Ipkiss, keeps one half but the other falls into the hands of an even bigger loser than Ipkiss was in the first film. During the course of the picture the two keep trying to aquire the other's piece, continually fighting in what will undoubtably be over-the-top scenes of CGI. Actually...that sounds rather nifty. May 24, 1998... No -- there can't be something new to report about this project! you say. Read on and learn that there is!

"I've got a scoop for you, sent to me by a mole from New Line Cinema. It seems that the plotline with the 'fighting over halves of The Mask' in The Mask's Revenge is going to be a subplot -- I repeat, subplot. The Mask 2's production is going along at a plodding pace, and even though Jim 'Ventura' Carrey is under contract to do the sequel he is busy with The Incredible Mr. Limpet, that Andy Kauffman flick and possibly the Dumb and Dumber prequel sequel. That should give everyone plenty of time to make a flawless script, eh? Here's the new synopsis being shopped around:

"Stanley Ipkiss is targeted by revenge by the Mask itself, as it (in what is supposed to be slapstick comedy) magically follows Ipkiss around Edge City, trying to stick itself back onto Ipskiss's face. I guess the Mask is ticked off that it had to be disposed. Ipkiss eventually catches it and splits it into two with the help of Milo, his dog. Ipkiss keeps one half; Milo throws one piece into a sewer, and it floats off into Paris, where the bad guy, Dorian Tyrel, from number one has resurfaced from his toliet flushing and creates his own mob (don't ask how) and finally has Paris as his own playground. One of the henchmen in his mob is a new recruit, a skinny, geeky and nerdy loser who is always picked on finally gets his break when he finds the split half of the Mask. Zany things from there on happen.

"Lt. Kellaway, however is on the case of the mob and goes to Paris to expose and arrest them. But we all know that the Dorian character is pissed off at Ipkiss for flushing him down the toilet: one of the Big Guys from his mafia, 'Walter' (the huge brute from the TV show and comics) is ordered by Dorian to go back to Edge City, retrieve the Mask and kill Ipkiss. Walter breaks into Ipkiss's house and beats the crap out of him and Ipkiss has no other choice left but to put half the mask back on in self defense. Walter eventually kidnaps Tina and plods back to Paris with Stanley Ipkiss/The Mask and Milo in hot pursuit. Ipkiss meets the big loser and says to him that he needs that other half more than the loser himself does. That is when that 'glorious CGI battle' begins, where they fight for each other's halves of the Mask, which is what The Mask exactly want them to do: fight to the death...and that is, as the title puts it, it's 'revenge'. All joking aside, the main mission here is to stop Dorian, destroy the mob, maybe pass the Mask onto others (maybe Lt. Kellaway to display his own brand of justice...he could be JUDGE DREDD!), have the dog bite a couple of butts, evade the all-intimidating Walter, rescue Tina and live happily ever after...

"Rumor has it that the geek and Ipkiss team up to save the day. More mythology on The Mask itself will be revealed, as did a scene in the original movie showed but was cut (it can be seen on DVD). If you did by any chance miss it, it had to do with the Lost Vikings who sail to the edge of the world with a locked treasure chest with a mask which has Loki's mischevous spirit inside. They bump into a strange land and bury the chest for good. They don't care what to call the land and they leave. Centuries later, that mysterious land has become Edge City, where a scuba diver finds the treasure chest with The Mask...you know what happens after that...anyways, I'll keep a close eye on what happens on The Mask 2 and see if anything else surfaces in the slowest production to an already guaranteed hit."

[A friendly pat on the back to 'Antonio43' for sending us in fresh tip.]

October 6, 1998... Perhaps we won't be seeing Carrey in this after all... "Jim Carrey will probably not appear in the movie, if the movie will be produced anyway, because he said in an interview to an Israeli newspaper that he'll never do sequels again and he only did Ace Ventura 2 because it was written in the contract for the first movie."
