July 1, 1998... Expected to be a tentpole release for the studio in whichever summer they decide to release it, Disney has picked this up with a high-six-figure, low-seven if the picture sees the twilight of the inside of a cinema. Stated to be the first major Disney flick centered around a black family, it deals with the curator of an exhibit in African history whose star attraction, a statute, becomes animate along with some friends. This will be accomplished by a combination of CGI and live action. Apparently, Lyons and Rice did their homework, because when they presented the idea to Mouse, Inc., they had pictures of the characters, soundtrack info, and samples of marketing tie-ins that could be.
