K-Pax

Genre: Science Fiction.

Studio: Universal Pictures.
Production Company: Overbrook Entertainment.

Project Phase: In Developement.

Who's In It: Will Smith (Prot, attached).
Who's Making It: Charles Leavitt (Screenwriter); Lawrence Gordon, Susan Pollock (Producers); based on a novel by Gene Brewer.

Premise: A mysterious patient named 'Prot' is admitted to a mental hospital who claims that he has traveled across time and space from a place he calls K-Pax, a planet whose inhabitants possess remarkable abilities. Determined to prove that Prot is nothing more than a tragic victim of multiple personality disorder, psychiatrist Gene Brewer soon finds himself doubting his own diagnosis. As the supposed alien interacts with the other troubled residents of the hospital, they undergo wondrous transformations and, one by one, shake off lives encumbered by mental disorders and become happy functioning people.

Release Date: Fall 1999.

Comments: With WB moving The Wild, Wild West to a Summer '99 release and Rob Liefeld's money troubles, Universal might have postponed The Mark. With that in mind, Smith and partner James Lassiter have decided to make this project a replacement. With this project Smith may be trying to produce a union between his earlier roles that showcased his acting chops (Six Degrees of Seperation with the parts that made him an action star (Independence Day and the forthcoming Enemy of the State.) Perhaps, but this project seems like it will be a tough sell at the box-office. E.T. meets Awakenings?

And incidentally, neither the novel nor film has any relation to the CBS affiliate of the same name located in Missoula, MT.

Rumors: Unknown.

October 8, 1998... Last summer Will Smith committed to do K-Pax for Universal Pictures and producers Lawrence Gordon and Susan Pollock. Smith, repped by Hollywood's juggernaut CAA, is attached to a number of other projects at Universal including the potential superhero event film called The Mark and Anything for You, a romantic comedy with Whitney Houston attached. But this is expected to be the first project for the actor under his first-look feature deal at Universal. He and his partner James Lassiter set up their production company Overbrook Entertainment at the studio last November. [Scoop dictated to us by 'Deadpool'.]
