Kingdom of the Sun

Genre: Animated/Family.

Studio: Walt Disney Pictures.
Production Company: Unknown.

Project Phase: In Development.

Who's In It: David Spade (Manco, Pancha); Eartha Kitt (The Sorceress); Carla Gugino; Owen Wilson.
Who's Making It: Roger Allers, Mark Dindal (Directors); Randy Fullmer (Producer); Don Hahn (Executive Producer); Sting (Songs); Andreas Deja (Lead Animator - 'Sorceress'); based upon The Prince and the Pauper.

Premise: When Prince Manco starts to feel the weight of authority sitting on his shoulders, he agrees to trade places with a llama herder named Pancha. The two are completely identical save for one telltale characteristic: Manco bears on his arm the sigil of his royal position, the mark of the sun. When an evil sorceress discovers their switch she turns Manco into a real llama. And when the task of running the country grows too daunting of a task for Pancha, she plans to take over the kingdom, knowing full well that the impostor is powerless to stop her.

Release Date: Between the summer 1999 and end of 2000, perhaps? Comments:

When will Disney find time to release this film in their already-crowded near future release schedule? Will it fall somewhere after next summer's Mulan and the subsequent Tarzan and wind up debuting in the summer of 2000?

Scoop Feedback

September 8, 1997... [Page drafted and submitted by 'Deadpool'.]

[Additional reporting done by 'althomas'.]

At the SIGGRAPH animation convention held in Los Angeles last August, Disney had some visibility for this upcoming project. The scooper said that, of the little he saw, the flavor of the project was full of South America. They also hazarded a guess that this project will be going up against DreamWorks SKG's similar-themed animated film, El Dorado: City of Gold. [Thanks to Mike Jonas.]

This scooper reports that the film will probably be the next released after Disney's Tarzan, and is similar to The Lion King in that traditional pop artists will contribute to the film's songs. ['Mickey18' did the work.]

September 30, 1997... "It's hardly a scoop, but you could put in Andreas Deja as an animator...he's the lead animator on Eartha Kitt's sorceress character. Don't forget the little guys that do big things!" Your wish is our command. [Scooped by an anonymous member of Andreas Deja's fan club.]

March 17, 1998... It's not much, but it's something to follow-up last year's September scoop. An anonymous person said that the sorceress character Andreas Deja is working on is called 'Yzma'. She's said to be "very vain, almost campy." [Anonymous.]
