April 5, 1998... According to UK newspaper coverage of Nick Hornby's new novel, John Cusack will co-write the High Fidelity movie with his co-writers from Grosse Point Blank. The film will be directed by Stephen Frears, who worked with Cusack on The Grifters. "The book is pretty damn good by the way," said our scooper Joanne Guest. "Though Cusack will have to brush up on his North London accent. [Submitted by Joanne Guest and Mike Gambit.]

April 11, 1998... Nick Hornby confirmed that John Cusack and Stephen Frears are on-board the project, and that Hornby is pleased with the choices Hornby isn't involved with the screenwriting work; he's currently penning an original screenplay instead of adapting his own books. May 28, 1998... "I thought you might want to know that Nick Hornby read from his new book, 'About A Boy' at the Elliot Bay Bookstore in Seattle last night. After the reading, he took questions from the audience. I asked him about the movie version of High Fidelity was developing, and whether he had any input into it.

"He said that the film was being developed by 'John Cusack and the same team that did Grosse Pointe Blank', that Stephen Frears was set to direct. He expressed his delight with the choice of Cusack ('I could do a hell of a lot worse than falling in with that lot, couldn't I?'), and said that the last time he talked to John and Stephen, the project was 'ready to go'.

"Oh, and he said it would be set in the States, and not in London (this drew a saddened, 'Awwwwwww....' from the crowd)."
