April 11, 1998... All current rumors about the status of this project are apparently null and void. The Dreaming website reports that Gaiman and Pratchett have recently sold the film rights to the Samuelsons, and that a screenwriter has yet to be chosen. A rumor making the rounds had stated that the option was with Warner Brothers, who were waiting on a reaction to another "religious comedy," Dogma, before greenlighting this endeavor.

In other news, apparently two other versions of screenplays have already existed, one by the original authors and one by Gaiman himself, where he stated in an interview that he couldn't make the book "fit" into a ninety-minute movie. In another interview, Gaiman intimated that a while back the project tried to get off the ground, but the people working on it wanted to lose the British flavor of the book--and it didn't work. October 8, 1998... For those keeping score, the quite excellent Done Deal website lists the aforementioned deal with the Samuelsons taking place on March 18 of this year. [Originally appeared on Done Deal; reported by 'Widgett'.]
