June 23, 1998... Cameron Diaz has also expressed interest in taking part in this project.

Gilliam himself, in interviews, has stated that this project has been in development since The Fisher King (1991) but the studio had not been forthcoming with an agreed start date. They were uncertain that Gilliam could pull it off with the proposed budget of $25 million. The IMDB, on the other hand, lists a late spring 1998 start date -- so perhaps those troubles are behind him. [Originally appeared in Ain't-It-Cool-News, Dreams, IMDB; reported by 'Widgett'.]

November 10, 1998... This just in -- after the belated London premiere of Gilliam's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas last night, our scooper asked Terry Gilliam on the way out whether there was any progress on The Defective Detective project. Gilliam said that they were just in the process of extricating it from a producer who'd been sitting on it, and this would free it up so that hopefully they could start making some progress. [Thanks to our man 'rmalcolm' for being gutsy.]
