July 26, 1998... Paramount acquired the option on Carr's novel for $750,000 many moons ago and a script was commissioned. However, the team of Kaufman and Rudin went to the white shirts asking for a budget of $50 million. In January of 1997 they gave the pair 60 days to set the film up at another studio, which apparently did not happen. As a result, the film is still at Paramount, and in a holding pattern. Or is it? Carr himself in an interview with Salon Magazine said of the project, "It's dead. It's been a classic tale of futility."
