October 25, 1998... When Michael Douglas was on-board the project shooting was scheduled to start in late August '98 at the giant tank in Malta, Spain as well as in Rome. When Douglas exited the project it received a major setback and that schooting window was blown away.
Then, we received a scoop from a source in-the-know who told us that the latest rumor going around the casting department for U-571 is that there might be no star replacement for the Douglas role. Originally scheduled to begin lensing this fall, the set, including a full scale model of a World War II submarine, is complete on island of Malta, our top secret submariner told us. "Delay due to drop-out of Michael Douglas (scheduling conflict). Script now being re-written to accomodate younger cast. Possible shoot date for Spring 1999."
