See Also: COLOR-FORE, EDIT LINE, COLORS 37 MAIN MENU MAIN MENU Summary: The first menu to appear when starting Image-3D. The menu contains the commands to begin a drawing session as well as program configuration. Menu(s): When first starting the program Procedure: The first menu to appear in Image-3D is the Main Menu. The commands listed refer mostly to the operating control and setup of Image-3D. IMAGE DRAW starts a drawing or editing session using files from the DRAWINGS file directory. SETUP FILE creates a new drawing template file. VERSION displays distribution information for Image-3D Version 2.0. SAVE CONFIG saves the Disk Drive and/or Path setting for the location of Drawing Files. DRAWINGS allows you to set the Disk Drive or Directory Image-3D will use to read and write your drawing files. QUIT ends the Image-3D program. Note: You will also return to this menu when you select END (and after confirming your selection) from the Image-3D Menu. Be sure to Save Your File before returning to the Main Menu. See Also: IMAGE DRAW, SAVE IMAGE 38 MOVE MOVE Summary: Displays the Move Menu, where you can move your Image in any of six directions and by a number of different unit increments. Menu(s): IMAGE-3D Procedure: By selecting MOVE from the Image-3D Menu, the Move Menu appears and displays the current Move Unit in the lower right-hand corner of the screen. You can move your image Left and Right (X-Axis), Forward and Backward (Y-Axis), and Up and Down (Z-Axis). Choosing any of these six directions will cause the image to be recalculated and displayed in the new position. The amount of movement is set by selecting either the 200, 500 or 1000 Units from the menu, or by using the SPECIFY command to enter your own increment in the range of 1-1500 units. Note: The program calculates your viewpoint using the center coordinate 0,0,0. Centering your image with the MOVE command allows you to have a more equal rotation and tip transformation. This will prevent major portions of your image from being rotated out of view. To center your image, use Orthographic views such as a front view, top view or side view (F1-F6 KEYS). And the Axes Grid (F8 KEY) is also very useful. Note: The graphics cursor remains at the current coordinates and does not MOVE with your Image. See Also: F1-F6 KEYS, F8 KEY, F10 KEY, SCALE 39 MOVE PEN MOVE PEN Summary: Allows you to move the graphics cursor without drawing a line. Menu(s): DRAW Procedure: After selecting MOVE PEN, use the LEFT, RIGHT, UP, and DOWN cursor keys to position the graphics cursor. The position you choose will become the starting point for the next line you draw with the DRAW command. Use the HOME key to toggle between the three drawing planes to control your movement in 3D space. Like the DRAW command, the F9 KEY is used to set or change the increment the graphics cursor will move each time one of the cursor keys is pressed. When you have the graphics cursor positioned, press the ESCAPE key. Cursor key control will now pass back to the Draw Menu where you can begin selecting commands again. See Also: DRAW, LEFT-RIGHT, FRONT-BACK, TOP-BOTTOM, F9 KEY 40 NORMAL NORMAL Summary: Sets the viewport back to normal after having used the SMALL or LARGE command. Menu(s): ENLARGE Procedure: The viewport returns to its normal setting, your image is redrawn, and the primary menu where you issued the ENLARGE command is redisplayed. See Also: ENLARGE, SMALL, LARGE 41 PLAN VIEW PLAN VIEW Summary: Displays three Orthographic views, in addition to the current 3D viewpoint, using Full Screen Mode. Menu(s): VIEW Procedure: The screen is cleared and is divided into four equal sections. In each section a different view of your image will be drawn. Three of the views are Orthographic views, which are "straight on" views of your image. The fourth view will be the same view that was previously displayed when you selected this command. The top-left display is the Top View. The bottom-left display is the Front View. The bottom-right display is the Right Side View. The top-right display is the current 3D viewpoint. Like the FULL SCREEN command, this screen is another good location where a memory resident screen printing program can be used. After viewing your image with PLAN VIEW, press any key and you will return to the normal viewport and View Menu. Note: If the Axes Grid is On, it will be temporarily turned off for this command. See Also: F1-F6 KEYS, XYZ VP 42 PREVIOUS PREVIOUS Summary: Returns you to the previous menu or to the previous primary menu. Menu(s): Almost all of them. Procedure: To move from one menu to another you must select a command or menu title from a currently displayed menu. In some cases, such as LINE COLOR, you will return immediately to the Draw Menu once you make a menu selection. In other cases, such as the Scale Menu, a specific menu title appears in the menu list (i.e. Scale Type) to redirect your menu control. However, the COLORS command can be performed on either the View, Draw, Edit or Image-3D Menus. In this cases, PREVIOUS will return you to the primary menu where you selected the command. 43 QUIT QUIT Summary: Ends Image-3D. Menu(s): MAIN MENU Procedure: After selecting QUIT, you will be prompted to confirm your selection. NO will return you to the Main Menu. YES will end the Image-3D program and you will be returned to DOS. 44 SAVE CONFIG SAVE CONFIG Summary: Saves the DRAWINGS specification in a file on disk and is used each time Image-3D is run. Menu(s): MAIN MENU Procedure: Image-3D supports the use of a Disk Drive and path specification for your Drawing files. The configuration can be set by using the DRAWINGS command. Once you have set up the program configuration using this command, issue the SAVE CONFIG command to save the setting on disk. Image-3D saves the setting in the file named: IMAGE-3D.SET. Each time Image-3D is run this setting will be displayed on the Main Menu Screen. Note: The Library setting is not applicable to Version 2.0 Note: If you have a write protection label on the Image-3D system disk, temporarily remove it for this command. 45 SAVE IMAGE SAVE IMAGE Summary: Saves your drawing and all current settings on disk. Menu(s): IMAGE-3D Procedure: Selecting SAVE IMAGE will save your image on disk. The file will have the name you specified when you started drawing or editing, and will also have the extension ".3DM". All your current settings will also be saved including the current location of the graphics cursor. After your image has been saved, press any key and you can resume control of the menu selector. Note: Your drawing is saved as numerical data and not as a memory image of the screen. The size of the file will be directly related to the number of lines you have in your drawing. Should you ever create an image with the maximum amount of lines (3000) the file will require around 100K bytes of disk space. Note: You can not save your file from the Main Menu, so be sure to save it before selecting END from the Image-3D Menu. See Also: MAIN MENU 46 SCALE SCALE Summary: Leads you to the Scale Menu, where you can increase or decrease the size of your image. You can also scale each Axis independently. Menu(s): IMAGE-3D Procedure: By selecting SCALE from the Image-3D Menu, the Scale Type Menu appears with four menu choices: ALL SIDES, HEIGHT, WIDTH, LENGTH. You must select one of these options. After selecting a Scale Type the Scale Menu will appear and display the current Scale Factor in the lower right-hand corner of the screen. To change your Scale Factor, select from the menu one of the following: .99, .95, .90, .75, .50. The SMALLER and LARGER commands will scale your image using the Scale Type you selected and by the Scale Factor currently displayed. Your Image will be recalculated and then redrawn on the screen. You can continue to scale your image or return to a previous menu using either the SCALE TYPE or the PREVIOUS commands listed in the menu. Note: Like the MOVE commands, the graphics cursor remains at its current coordinates and does not SCALE with your image. Note: Scaling your image down to a tiny dot on the screen will run the risk of setting some of the x,y,z coordinates to zero. If this happens you may be unable to bring your image back up to its normal size or shape. Note: Scaling your image 2 to 3 times larger than the viewport will run the risk of your image hitting the "edge of 3D space" (+ or - 7,000 units). The coordinates of your image will begin to reset to + or - 7,000 and alter the shape of your image. See Also: ALL SIDES, HEIGHT, WIDTH, SCALE TYPE, SMALLER, LARGER, LENGTH, MOVE, FACTOR... 47 SCALE TYPE SCALE TYPE Summary: Returns you to the Scale Type Menu, where you select the type of scaling you want to perform. ALL SIDES, HEIGHT, WIDTH, or LENGTH. Menu(s): SCALE MENU. You will also stop at the Scale Type menu when you first select SCALE from the Image-3D Menu. Procedure: The Scale Type Menu allows you to select different types of scaling: ALL SIDES scales all the sides of your drawing at once. HEIGHT allows you to scale your image taller or shorter. WIDTH fattens or trims the width of your image. LENGTH will allow you to lengthen or shorten your image. With these options, you can take a simple cube and turn it into a long flat slab, or a tall, thin pillar. See Also: SCALE, ALL SIDES, HEIGHT, WIDTH, LENGTH, SMALLER, LARGER, FACTOR... 48 SELECT >>> SELECT >>> SELECT <<< SELECT <<< Summary: Enables you to select a previously drawn line for editing. Menu(s): EDIT Procedure: Both SELECT commands allow you to pick a previously drawn line for editing. SELECT >>> allows you to "Step" through each line in your image from the first line drawn to the last. SELECT <<< allows you to "Step" through each line in your image from the last line drawn to the first. Each line is redrawn using an Editing Line Style which will allow you to find and follow the lines easily through your drawing. By pressing a key other than RETURN you can advance the selection line through each of the lines in the image. A message at the top of the screen will keep you updated to the line count of the image and how many lines you have stepped through. When the line that you want to edit is redrawn using the Editing Line Style, press RETURN. You can now use the DELETE LINE command, or the EDIT LINE command (EGA only) to edit your selected line. Stepping through your image without choosing a line will not cause a selection to take place. If you want to cancel the SELECT function once you have started through your drawing, you can press the ESCAPE KEY. The current line will be redrawn and no change or selection will have occurred. See Also: DELETE LINE, EDIT LINE 49 SETUP FILE SETUP FILE Summary: Creates a new drawing template that is used each time you start a new drawing. Menu(s): MAIN MENU Procedure: A short menu appears with the options: NO and YES. A message will also appear that reminds you about the function of this command. SETUP FILE allows you to use one of your drawing files that has the settings you like as a new drawing template. Each time you begin a new drawing, Image-3D loads the settings that are in the file: SETUP.TMP. SETUP FILE will transfer the following settings from your selected drawing file to SETUP.TMP: Draw and Axes Units, Move Unit, Scale Unit, your Current XYZ Viewpoint, Currently Selected Drawing Plane, Background & Foreground Color Selections. If you do not want to create a new template file, then select NO and you will return to the Main Menu. Selecting YES will clear the screen, display a listing of the drawing files from the disk or directory currently set for your drawing files, and prompt you for a filename. If you discover the file you want to use is not listed, or you want to cancel the command, then press ESCAPE and you will return to the Main Menu. If the desired file is listed, then enter its name (without the ".3DM" extension). Image-3D will read your file and then update SETUP.TMP. After this is performed, press any key and you'll return to the Main Menu. Each time you start a new drawing, the new settings you just transferred will be used. Note: If you have a write protection label on the Image-3D system disk, temporarily remove it for this command. 50 SMALL SMALL Summary: Allows you to select one of nine different areas of the viewport to enlarge. Menu(s): ENLARGE Procedure: The viewport will divide into nine quadrants. Choose the menu option that corresponds to the quadrant you want to enlarge. After making a selection, the viewport will be redrawn to display only the area in the selected quadrant. You will be returned to the View Menu. If you were already viewing an enlarged quadrant when you selected SMALL, the screen will be redrawn in order to display all 9 areas. You can select a new area or use the PREVIOUS command to make no change to your selected viewport. You can also switch from SMALL to LARGE without having to use the NORMAL command. See Also: ENLARGE, LARGE, NORMAL 51 SMALLER SMALLER Summary: A scaling command that reduces the size of your image using the Scale Type you have chosen and by the current Scale Factor. Menu(s): SCALE Procedure: The program will recalculate your drawing data and then display your scaled image. The degree of scaling will be dependent upon the Scale Factor being used. After selecting the command you will remain in the Scale Menu where you can continue with another operation. Use SCALE TYPE to change the type of scaling operation, or PREVIOUS to return to the Image-3D Menu. See Also: SCALE, SCALE TYPE, ALL SIDES, HEIGHT, WIDTH, LENGTH, LARGER, FACTOR... 52 SPECIFY SPECIFY Summary: Allows you to specify the unit increment used when moving your image. Menu(s): MOVE Procedure: The menus are not long enough to contain all the needed increments so the SPECIFY command allows you to enter your own. You may enter a Move Unit increment between 1-1500 units. Selecting SPECIFY will display "Move By How Many Units (1-1500):" in the top row of the display. Enter the number you would like the Move Unit increment set to. To cancel the command and make no change to the currently selected Move Unit, press ESCAPE. After you have entered your new increment, it will be displayed below the Move Menu. Any subsequent Move commands will move your image by the number of units indicated. See Also: MOVE 53 STATUS STATUS Summary: Displays a brief Status Report for your drawing. Menu(s): DRAW Procedure: Windows will appear in the viewport and display the following: The name of your current drawing. Rotation Angle of your viewpoint Tip Angle of your viewpoint Total number of lines in your drawing. Axes Grid On or Off Zoom (Enlarge) Level: Small, Large, or Normal All 16 colors and their numbers (EGA Display Only). Current system date Current system time After reviewing the Status Report, press any key and the viewport will clear and your image will be redrawn. 54 SWITCHCOLOR (CGA Display Only) SWITCHCOLOR Summary: Switches the colors used on the CGA Display. See Also: SCALE, SCALE TYPE, ALL SIDES, HEIGHT, LENGTH, SMALLER, LARGER, FACTOR... 59 XYZ VP XYZ VP Summary: Used to select your viewpoint around your image. Menu(s): IMAGE-3D, DRAW, VIEW, EDIT Procedure: The viewport clears and displays an XYZ Axes. The current degree of Rotation and Tip of your viewpoint is displayed on the right-hand side of the screen, as well as the currently set Axes Unit increment. The Axes are labeled with a letter that corresponds to the sides of your image, L (left), R (right), T (top), F (front), B (back). These labels will help you track your viewing position. Using the LEFT, RIGHT, UP, DOWN cursor keys you can rotate and tip the Axes. The LEFT and RIGHT cursor keys rotate your viewpoint, the UP and DOWN keys raise or lower (Tip) your viewpoint. The rule to remember is: You Are Moving Your Viewpoint, Not Your Image. Therefore, when you press the RIGHT cursor key you will move your viewpoint to the right, and the Axes will actually spin to the left. When you have selected your viewpoint, press RETURN. Your image will be recalculated and displayed using your new viewpoint. Note: The degree of movement the Axes rotates and tips each time you press a cursor key can be set using the F9 KEY while you are using the XYZ VP command. Note: If you have a currently enlarged viewport (SMALL or LARGE) you may need to select a new quadrant, since the image rotates on the point 0,0,0 and the area you were viewing may have been rotated out of view. See Also: F9 KEY 60 REGISTERED USER --------------- Image-3D Version 2.0 is a shareware program designed to introduce you to the opportunities and potential of 3D Computer Aided Design. A far more enhanced version of Image-3D, Version 4.0, is sent to users who find Image-3D of value and contribute a donation to its development and support. Version 4.0 contains the following extra features: *** Perspective Mode: Turn On the Perspective Mode and Image-3D will display your drawing using 3-Point Perspective. This feature makes your images appear even more realistic, since parallel lines will slope toward vanishing points on the horizon. Additionally, you can control the observation distance of your viewpoint as well as an imaginary window through which you are viewing your Image. *** Control Objects Independently: Independently control up to 100 user-designated objects. Move, Scale, Edit, even Extract an object to a separate file for later use. You supply the name of the object, from then on the name of the object will appear in the menus whenever needed. And objects can be anything from One line to an entire building or even an entire block of buildings. *** Extract objects, Create a Graphics Library: You'll never have to draw an object twice again. The EXTRACT command will make a copy of any of your objects and save it on disk. This allows you to create an entire library of graphic elements and objects which you can use over and over again. You just choose one of your objects from the menu, give it any filename you like and Image-3D will create a new file containing your selected object. You can also extract your entire drawing if you like. *** Merge Files and Graphic Libraries: When you need an object or graphic element from your library, or perhaps an entire drawing, you can retrieve it from disk and load it into the drawing you're working on. It will merge with your drawing as one of the separately controlled objects so you can move and scale it into your desired position. Together with the EXTRACT command, the MERGE command will greatly reduce the time required to draw your images as well as increase your ability to construct more creative and elaborate 3D drawings. continued 61 *** Copy and Mirror Copy Commands Version 4.0 has a Copy and Mirror Copy command that allows you to just choose your object and Image-3D creates a new copy for you. *** Text: Text can be created by just typing a word or short phrase from 1 to 20 characters in length at the keyboard. Image-3D will draw the text using lines. The text exists as an object so you can move, scale, and even edit it, like any of the other designated objects. Additionally, text can be created in 8 different orientations around your image. *** Graphics Library: Included with Version 4.0 are 51 library files containing circles, spheres, cones, cylinders, and other geometric objects. These objects can be Merged into your drawing and used over and over again to create 3D images. *** Plotter Support: Hewlett Packard and Houston Instrument Plotters are supported to provide high quality hardcopy output. Compatible plotters using either the Hewlett Packard HP-GL command set or the Houston Instrument DM/PL command set are also supported. Image-3D also allows pen changing for full 16 color plots. *** More Features: Draw in six different Line Styles, support for separate Drawing File and Library File Directories, and both the EGA or CGA Display systems are now in one program, so you can configure Version 4.0 for either adapter. Note: The system requirements for Image-3D Version 4.0 are the same as Version 2.0. 62 ERROR MESSAGES -------------- The following is a list of error messages used in Image-3D. In a number of cases, error messages were designed to correspond to similar error messages used by DOS. Others however, are more specific in order to track down the cause and solution to a problem. Bad Filename The filename contains characters that are invalid. Consult your DOS manual. Also, remember not to include the ".3DM" extension when Image-3D prompts you for a filename. Device Fault Device Timeout For users who are using DOS's supplied screen printing utility, these errors may occur if your printer is not ON (Device Timeout) or it stops running (Device Fault) after you have issued a PrtSc command. If you are using another screen printing program, it should have its own error messages and control procedures. Device unavailable An attempt was made to access a device that is either not "on-line" or does not exist. For example, setting a directory specification to "C:" when in fact, a hard disk is not in the computer. Disk is full, unable to proceed Image-3D attempted to write a file on a disk which contains insufficient free space. Replace the disk with another that contains more free space and retry the command. Disk media error An attempt was made to write or read a file from your disk. This error indicates your disk may be defective. Consult your DOS manual for procedures to check your disk. Disk not ready An attempt was made to write or read a file from your disk. Check to be sure the drive door is closed properly. Disk write protect An attempt was made to save a file to your disk and encountered a write protect label, remove it and retry the command. 63 File for new SETUP.TMP not found The drawing file you specified could not be found. Retry the command and be sure you are entering a filename that is listed in the directory. File: IMAGE-3D.SET not found This is the configuration file that contains information about your Drawing file Disk Drive or Directory. Image-3D must have this information in order to run properly. IMAGE-3D.SET file must be kept on the same disk as IMAGE.EXE. A new IMAGE-3D.SET file can be quickly created by configuring your program again, and using the SAVE CONFIG command. File: SETUP.TMP not found When starting a new drawing, the file: SETUP.TMP is loaded into memory and becomes the initial drawing template for your new drawing. SETUP.TMP must be kept on the same disk as IMAGE.EXE. If SETUP.TMP has been accidentally erased or destroyed, make a new copy from the original Image-3D disk or use the SETUP FILE command to create a new SETUP.TMP file. File to translate not found The drawing file you specified could not be found. Retry the command and be sure you are entering a filename that is listed in the directory. Image-3D files not found No drawing files were found on disk, or in the specified Directory or Drive for DRAWINGS. Internal error 101, 102, 103, 104, 105, or 106 An internal error in the Image-3D program has occurred. I would greatly appreciate you sending me a description of the circumstances that has caused the error, the error number, and the actions the program took after it happened. Invalid Directory The directory specification is not correct. Check to be sure the proper syntax is being used, see the command: DRAWINGS. Also, Image-3D will not create a new directory if one doesn't exist. Use DOS to create new directories. continued 64 Out of Memory There is insufficient free RAM. Check to be sure you don't have too many unnecessary memory resident programs currently in memory. Most Screen Printing Programs require less than 50K, so you should have enough memory to run Image-3D. If you have other memory resident programs in memory too, it may be necessary to remove some of them before running Image-3D. Out of paper For users who are using DOS's supplied screen printing utility, this error may occur when your printer runs out of paper before the screen has been printed. If you are using another screen printing program, it should have its own error messages and control procedures. 65 INDEX Manual1.txt, 2 ----- Manual2.txt, 2 MAIN MENU, command, 38 3D Space, 7, 17 Maximum 3D Space, 17 Maximum Lines, 17 ALL SIDES, command, 11 Memory Requirements, 3 Axes Grid Key, F8, 25 Menus, Using, 6 MOVE, command, 39 COLORS MENU, command, 12 MOVE PEN, command, 40 COLORS, command, 12 COLOR-BACK, command, 13 NORMAL, command, 41 COLOR-FORE, command, 14 Command Reference, 10-60 PLAN VIEW, command, 42 Configuration, Program, 4-5 PREVIOUS, command, 43 Printing, Screen, 3, 30 DELETE ALL, command, 15 DELETE LINE, command, 16 QUIT, command, 44 Disk Contents, 2 DRAW, command, 17 Readme.Txt, 2 DRAW Menu, command, 18 Redraw Key, F10, 27 DRAWINGS, command, 19 Registered User, 61-62 Drawing In 3D, 7 Rotation, 60 Drawing Planes, 7, 29, 35, 56 Sample Files, 9-10 EDIT LINE, command, 21 SAVE CONFIG, command, 45 EDIT Menu, command, 20 SAVE IMAGE, command, 46 END, command, 22 Scale Factor, 28 ENLARGE, command, 23 SCALE, command, 47 Error Messages, 63-65 SCALE TYPE, command, 48 Screen Printing, 3, 30 F1-F6 KEYS, 24 Setting Up Image-3D, 4-5 F8 KEY, 25 SELECT >>>, command, 49 F9 KEY, 26 SELECT <<<, command, 49 F10 KEY, 27 SETUP FILE, command, 50 FACTOR..., command, 28 Setup.Tmp, 2, 4, 5 FRONT-BACK, command, 29 SMALL, command, 51 FULL SCREEN, command, 30 SMALLER, command, 52 SPECIFY, command, 53 Graphics Cursor, 7, 17 STATUS, command, 54 SWITCHCOLOR, command, 55 HEIGHT, command, 31 System Requirements, 3 Image.Exe, 2, 4, 5 Table Of Contents, 2 Image-3D.Set, 2, 4, 5 Tip, 60 IMAGE DRAW, command, 32 TOP-BOTTOM, command, 56 Introduction, 1 VERSION, command, 57 Keyboard, reference, 8 Version Compatibility, 6 VIEW Menu, command, 58 LARGE, command, 33 LARGER, command, 34 WIDTH, command, 59 LEFT-RIGHT, command, 35 LENGTH, command, 36 XYZ VP, command, 60 LINE COLOR, command, 37 X,Y,Z Coordinates, 7 66
