I'll agree with Avi: to give a damn about fast food (or other such) employees! Union or not, I have no sympathy for them. In general, unions would be unnecessary if business were local and small. The head worker who had a few apprentices would lose crucial labor and reputation if even one made a stink. But unions can serve a purpose, even with a sensitive employer: to inform and persuade, not necessarily using ugly tactics. Once a union must be antagonistic toward management, something has gone very wrong (on the management side). Good business does not necessitate strong labor unions.

Reality, though, is bad business. I should note, at this point, that i subscribe to a free-market system (with ethical limitation s imposed by society -- ecology, etc.). But a truly free market means that there is no intervention from outside entities when employees unionize. They might get fired, but nobody forces them to break up, lest the "free" disappear from "free market."
