Just for the record. I am not completely satisfied with the idea that genetic engineering is completely safe. This is a relatively new technology that scientists and big corporations are dabbling in to try to increase profits without thought for the consequences.

However when I hear people talking about genetically engineered E coli it is normally used as a "Big Scary Thingy". There are many strains of E coli some of which are not pathogenic. The genetically modified strains are not pathogenic and are only used to produce chemicals by fermentation processes.

The most common cause of food poisoning cases is Staphylococcus aureus which resides quite happily on everyones skin and occasionally causes pimples. However the toxin that it produces in food is a worry because it cannot be degraded by heat. Therefore hygiene in extremely important in food processing. This is one of the reasons I will not eat at McD. You never know who's been touching the "food".
