: : What is this wourld comming to. As humans it is coming to the point that we can't make up our own minds. Someone is all ways telling you that no you can't do that and should not smoke that.

Hmmm. Now just which government declared "war on drugs"?

There's a great difference between informing someone of the dangers of their course of action and forming repressive laws to coerce people into following them.

: I think that no one should get a dime from the tobaco company for the simple fact that people made a choose to start to smoke so they should be responciable for that decision.

Of course, the fact that tobacco companies spent huge amounts of money to persuade to buy their product didn't make any difference at all.

If people had had clear, unbiased information on tobacco from the start, some of them might have chosen differently. As I understand it, herein lie the causes of the lawsuit - before the 80's, the tobacco-sponsored message in the mass media was that it was cool to smoke and that you weren't cool not to. Given this society's dependence on "orders from higher up" that the governments have instilled, it's not surprising that people were influenced by this.

I don't personally believe that you can make a truly independent "choice" unless you have access to both sides of the story.

: bob, I agree wholeheartedly with you. People need to make up their own mind and take responsibility for their actions. We would be better off without "big brothers" telling us what is best and promoting their own personal agendas.

So, would "big brothers" include corporate advertising agencies and governments in general? Or is it just "alternative" agendas that are suspect?

How can you receive a fair and unbiased view if one side holds the purse strings?

(not that governments carry out biological weapons testing on their populace without telling them, or dump nuclear waste in their seas, or imprison people to hinder free speech...oh no, definitely not...)

Gideon.
