Well this is Marx's own opinion. It's problematic that his opinion has been interpreted as part of his political program.Marx was a humanist but he believed that you couldnt realise humanism when capitalism compelled you to work against fellow humans.

I as a Christian could as easily say it is impossible to realise Christianity when I must work against my fellow man and respect money not God. The Muslim, Jew, Hindu etc. could all say this too.

Religion is up to the individual but what it can not be is a justification for conformity in any system.
