: Capitalism is basically the system by which one can make a profit. The opposite of capitalism would then be a society that does not allow profit. How then do you redistribute something when it is never created in the first place?

They know that socialism, in its purest form, discourages independent effort, since all goods produced over the "state's" determiniation of what is needed, is redistributed to those less willing to put forth an effort. So, eventually, no one being able to profit from their effort equals no one willing to put forth effort beyond what is needed to survive. Of course, socialism still has its "Fat Cats"; those party officials or government faithful always seem to be quite a bit more "equal" than the common worker, don't they?
