: However it is true that people do need a real incentive to get them to work, paying everyone the same salary would lead to people seeking easy jobs. It's not enough to tell people that their effort is appreciated, they need a paycheck to see exactly how much it is appreciated.

Which jobs are the "easy" jobs? I doubt that if the line-jobs at GM paid the same as being Roger Smith or whoever his current incarnation is that anyone with a choice would choose working on the line over sitting in a conference room with a bunch of people who do your bidding and who want you to like them. If it's all about effort and cash, why is there such a thing as an executive dining room?

Garbage man doesn't pay very well, but I doubt there'd be a big long line of potential garbage men at the dump the day after all salaries were made the same.

One of the reasons this whole discussion never seems to go beyond capitalism versus socialism versus communism is that everyone bases their systems upon money as the primary good that needs to be governed or left ungoverned. What would our theoretical economic systems look like if "free time" was the prized output? Or if "proximity to 10 acres of forest" were the prized output? Or if "number of people alive today who know your name and face" were the prized output? Is there any way other than CASH to quantify our existence?
