This is Alienation

O.K. This is a quick run down on Alienation but you really should read Marx or his contempories they spent years studying industrial sociology and formulating their views.

There is a number of points:

(1) Mass production- Everything is not really produced to demand, if it was half the world wouldnt be covered with store houses. If goods where produced to need rather than the next competitive quota working hours would be reduced allowing you greater time away from essential labour.
(2) Non-essential and essential labour- within capitalism a lot of need is artificial (20 different washing up powders)this increases the working day reduces wages.
(3) The worker either has no need for or cant use what they produce. It is taken away from them.

These are the main points in my opinion different authors approach it differently. I understand your problem in the service sector it is far more difficult to define demand because nothing 'Solid' is the real result and truthfully things are produced that the workers wouldnt require anyway.

However when alienation is considered if the labour can be 'Reformatted' so as not to generate negative feelings in the worker and the conditions changed there would be hightened efficiency and a reduction in waste.
