Something for the whiners to think about

Here in Kingston we are in a state of emegancy after much of eastern Ontario and Quebec were hit with devasting freezing rain, knocking down thousands of trees, electric/telephone poles and wires. My house has been without power/heat for four days. Those near Montreal much longer. Estimates on power restoration have now been changed from days to weeks. At least the university got the library reopened so I'm back online (with heat) until it closes at 8. The temperature, which has been unusually mild, is slated to drop sharply tonight, leaving bursting pipes and flooding a distinct possibility. Luckily cassualities have been few.

For all the Canadians/Americans who whine constantly about the state of affairs here, such as small government cutbacks, NHL teams moving, poor food being surved in prison, etc. please consider what real hardship is. We have just gotten a small taste of what much of the worlds population endures regularly. I'm happy to live here where this was a once in a century fluke disaster. It sure makes one realize how much we rely on modern conveniece, although its sickening to here some on the radio complain about such trivial matters as not getting their newspaper or having only raw fruits and veggies and bread to eat. Someone even complained about the restaurant where they had reservations being without power, so all they could find to eat was a pizza. Others have complained about train service being stopped due to fallen trees/lines (what do they expect to be done?) and the train running out of tea. People should stop whining so much about what they want and be happy with what they have. It could have been worse, remember the recent Manitoba flood (although amazingly, the cost to clean up our mess is supposed to be several times the damage done in Manitoba!)

The next time your AOL service goes down or you don't agree with some government policy, keep it in perspective.
