: I don't think there is any question that minors are not free and shouldn't be considered free. That is a cornerstone of rational society.: In this particular question, I have to agree with you. Legally, we are considered adults (can vote, serve in the military, etc.) once 18. The fact that alcohol consumption has to wait another three years is ridiculous.
: One thing I'd like to point out, however, is that a law prohibiting alcohol consumption under the age of 21 DOES NOT exist. The actual law simply forbids any Federal highway money to states that allow drinking under 21. So indirectly, it prohibits it.
Texas is one state where the legal drinking age is 21. I do have to agree. If you are legally an adult at 18, then the drinking age should also be 18. It went up to 19 just before my 18th birthday in the early 80's.
What needs to be done is more dilligent enforcement of the DWI laws that are on the books. When it becomes clear that drunk driving will not be tolerated, then you will start seeing the problem decrease dramatically.
Having watched numerous episodes of "COPS", I've seen many thirtysomethings and fortysomethings being nailed for drunk driving. Many of them had numerous arrests for that offense. It's clear that many longtime adults are irresponsible when it comes to drinking.
None.
