Day 285 - 23 Oct 96 - Page 04

Page 18, the central -- well, the first two columns on
that page refer to DDT and other agricultural pesticides
and how some imports into the United States have had to be
rejected because of pesticide residues in the beef. So it
was actually -- that is the way it was noticed, through
the residues. But there are quite a lot of references in
       there anyway.

The other thing is in 'Hoof Prints in The Forest', which
is in the original list of documents and verified by
Douglas Shane, our expert witness, I don't know what
number of the original documents it was. (Pause) I don't
know if anyone bothered to put our documents in the index.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Well, I will be able to find them because
       I looked at it --

MR. MORRIS: Yes, it was number 8 in the original list of
       documents.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Right. Are there page references you want
       to give me there?

MR. MORRIS: Sorry, yes. In terms of poisons and chemicals,
herbicides and pesticides, page 15, it talks about the use
       of agent orange and Tordone (?), which contains dioxine;
on page 22, use of herbicides and pesticides; on pages 83
and 84, for example, in 1977 fifteen shipments of
Guatemalan beef from the country's cotton region were
refused entry to the US because they were found to contain
traces of DDT. And in 1980 Guatemalan beef exports were
suspended for several months due to high readings of DDT.
And then on page 84 it says: In Costa Rica, 1,284,000
pounds of Costa Rican beef was rejected that was imported
into the USA by the USDA Food Safety and Inspection
Service because of residues and dangerous pesticides.
And there is a reference on page 28 of that book....
And I do have the whole book if you wanted to borrow it at
       any stage.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What I suggest is that when we come to the
end of submissions generally, if any of the parties want
me to take away while I write my judgment the whole book
of matters of which I have got photocopies of parts in the
volumes, then do so, and they will be returned when I
deliver judgment. But keep it until then in case you need
       to use it yourself.

MR. MORRIS: Right. On page 28 there is a reference to Brazil
as well. That is slightly different. I do not think that
was a page that we disclosed. Something I looked at last
       night.

While we are on the subject of 'Hoof Prints in The
Forest', if I can make a general point, that on page 4
of 'Hoof Prints in The Forest' there is a reference at
the bottom of that page to 30,000 species of vascular
plants, which, as I think Miss Steel gave evidence about
this book, was one of the reference books available in the
file at London Greenpeace office, the rainforest file. It
